Flight Craft 28: McDonnell Douglas… ePub (30.8 MB) Add to Basket | £6.99 |
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was the most-produced American supersonic military jet with 5,195 aircraft being produced. By any standards the F-4 has been incredibly successful, used not only by the USAF and US Navy but many air forces around the world including Germany, Israel, Turkey and Japan.
The F-4 was designed as a long-range fighter interceptor and fighter bomber, excellent in all roles assigned to it. The Phantom has performed leading roles in multiple conflicts around the world from the Vietnam War through to the Gulf War. Although the F-4 left US service in 1996 it has continued in service with other air forces, only just being retired in 2020 from the Japanese Air Self-Defence Force.
This new title in Pen & Sword's highly successful Flight Craft series covers the development and operational use of the F-4 Phantom II and brings to life the variety of colour schemes and markings applied by many of the multiple air arms that have operated the Phantom around the world by including quality colour profiles.
Multiple model projects are included covering significant variants of the F-4 like the F-4B, F-4D, F-4E, F-4F, F-4G, F-4J, F-4EJ-Kai; British FGR-2 and F-4J(UK). All the popular model scales are represented: 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32A first for scale modellers everywhere – a book aimed at scale modellers of all levels interested in building the F-4 Phantom II.

If your passion tends toward models vs the actual aircraft, this book may well fill your needs rather nicely, and inspire you to tackle a kit or two yourself as well.

"This is an excellent reference for modellers, and is good value."
International Plastic Modellers Society, IPMS Magazine – Issue 1, 2023
It would be impossible to cover the Phantom in depth in ninety six pages, so this book is very much a starting point for some, whilst for others it will provide all the information needed to start building this heavyweight combat jet.
Scale Aircraft Modelling
As a source of inspiration for a phantom build this book is well worth the consideration.
This offering is one of the most appealing I have looked through as it covers an aircraft that covers so many countries and this also greatly increases the various looks that can be achieved by the modeller with an off the shelf kit.

This is not the only reference guide a Phantom modeler will want in their library, but for a builder new to the Phantom it is a great start.

Overall, this is a very attractive and informative survey of the Phantom F-4, and a useful addition to the Pen & Sword’s Flight Craft series. As a wee boy, I lived next to an RAF airfield, and I vividly remember the Phantoms roaring overhead on their way to intercept Soviet ‘Bears’. So, like Coughlin, I love Phantoms too! After reading his book, I might have to go out and buy a kit to build.

"In line with other books in this series, we are provided with the background and development of the aircraft along with a brief look at the various nations that have operated the type."
ModelingMadness.com, July 2022
I have really enjoyed this book having spent 3 years stationed at RAF Wildenrath and thus experiencing the Phantom at very close quarters with 19 and 92 Squadrons. It is one powerful machine! I found the authors knowledge of the history of this aircraft particularly engaging and a very good read.
Christopher Coughlin
The narrative moves seamlessly into the actual modelling and I particularly liked the quality of the artwork which displays the technique and quality of Geoff’s work brilliantly.

Flight Craft 11: English Electric Lightning (Paperback)
Developed to intercept increasingly capable Soviet bombers such as the Tupolev Tu-16, Tu-22 and Tu-95, the English Electric/BAC Lightning had a phenomenal rate of climb, a high ceiling, and a top speed of over 1,300mph at 36,000ft, and is a favourite of both aviation enthusiasts and aircraft modellers alike. This homage to the only all-British Mach 2 interceptor fighter, follows previous Flight Craft book formats, in that it is split in to three main sections. The first section offers a concise design and development history covering the six main single-seat fighter and two twin-seat trainer Marks;…
