Winston Churchill's obsession with the Dardanelles had fatal consequences for many thousands of servicemen. Moreover it almost destroyed the career of the most influential British figure of this Century. Penn's latest work examines in depth an extraordinary and ill-matched politico/military relationship which was to have the most far-reaching results.

The book contains many quotes, in which Penn excels. It does not make reading very easy, one must like it. In general it is not a book that is easy to read. That is partly because of the complex subject the book is about, but mostly the writer is hard to follow. His line of reasoning becomes blurred along the pages. Sometimes it was needed to check external sources to follow the story. The book is in the English language, what makes it an international book. Writers for such a market should take in mind that not everybody is familiar with typical English facts like First Sea Lord or First Lord of the Admiralty. A short explanation would be welcome. The entire controversy between Churchill and his several Sea Lords depend on this.

In general this book is well taken care of.
