Early Jet Fighters 1944-1954:… ePub (20.4 MB) Add to Basket | £6.99 |
In his previous book on early jet fighters Leo Marriott traced the history of the revolutionary aircraft produced by the British and Americans immediately after the Second World War; in this companion volume he describes jet fighter development on the continent of Europe and in the Soviet Union during the same remarkable period. Using over 200 archive photographs he covers the pioneering German designs, then the range of experimental and operational fighters constructed by the Soviets, the French and the Swedes. The sheer variety of the designs that manufacturers came up with during this short, intense period of innovation mean that the book is fascinating reading.
Several of the most famous jet fighters feature prominently in the rare photographs and are analysed in the expert text, including the Messerschmitt Me 262, the Heinkel He 162, the MiGs 15, 17 and 19, the Dassault Ouragan and the Saab J29. But perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the book is its record of experimental projects which tested new concepts that rapidly became established elements of jet aircraft design. The photographs of these largely forgotten aircraft give us an insight into the extraordinary technical challenges and the ambition and inventiveness of the designers and manufacturers who overcame them.
This volume, while analyzing the German jets in the first chapter, a topic that has been extensively treated, amazes instead for the space dedicated to the nations that pioneered jet flight such as France or Sweden, and the various attempts by Italy and Argentina. There is no doubt that, however, the rarest photos are those from beyond the Iron Curtain, with the various models of the USSR, which after some false starts established itself as one of the leaders in the production of jet fighters.

Another addition to the very popular Images of War series, with a mass of outstanding and rare images. The author covers important early jet combat aircraft, most of which have not been covered well before – Very Highly Recommended

This book is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in wartime and post war jet fighter development. This text is easy to read and yet remains informative throughout. As with other titles within the Images of War series, it is a work which can be used as either a standalone work, or as a springboard for further studies.

Of interest are the different aerodynamic designs that tried to eek out a few more kph in speed while trying to figure out how to use these new jet engines. Enjoyed it.

Scale Modelling Now
This offering from Pen and Sword as part of their Images of War series is what I consider a general reference on a specific aspect in that it covers aircraft generally from a specific global location. The images are good and introduced me to some twin boom aircraft from the period that I was unaware of and that I would love to replicate in miniature. I feel the value of this title is when looking for a subject to energise you for your next build.

If your interest is in mainland European early jet fighter development then this is an excellent start point and also the modeller may find that the pictures provide a different set of views for their hobby or even new project for the future.

The book was really interesting and very detailed to which the enthusiast I would have thought would find appealing. A really interesting book for anyone interested in the history of military aviation, and those into making models. Even I would give this book a well-earned 4 out of 5 stars.
UK Historian
The early post-WW2 years were a period of experimentation in the application of new jet technology for aviation design, a lot of it based around the advanced German designs that the various allies captured at the end of the war. Lots in here showing aircraft that are well known, but equally many that have remained largely ignored. A really interesting book for anyone interested in the history of military aviation, and modellers of course.
