Prior to the 1972 Local Government Act’s redistribution of county boundaries, the West Riding of Yorkshire was the largest county in England. Prior to Henry VIII’s earlier acts of redistribution, the West Riding’s religious establishments numbered a minimum of 334 that have left record of their foundation. Some 194 of those churches also have left record of their art, which constitutes the larger part of this volume’s subject entries. Palmer impressively catalogues this large, diverse, and art-rich county, offering to the scholarly public a picture of its artistic distinctions and variations and producing a welcomed contribution long due for researchers of English early art and drama.
