Derwentcote steel furnace is a remarkable relic from the early phases of the Industrial Revolution, when the Derwent Valley was the cradle of the British Steel industry and 'Newcastle Steel' was the finest in Europe. This report results from a programme of historical research, structural recording, and excavation that accompanied the conservation of the monument by English Heritage.
