Class 50: A Pictorial Journey is an album of photographs, mainly taken by David Cable, a well-regarded author of a number of picture albums, covering trains both in the UK and in many countries worldwide.

The class 50 was an express locomotive built in the late 1960s and withdrawn at the beginning of the 1990s. Nicknamed hoovers because of their distinctive noise, they were a favourite class of many railway enthusiasts, resulting in several having been preserved.

The photos demonstrate the many areas of operation and duties undertaken by these locomotives, initially in the North of England and Scotland, and then regular duties on the Western region and finally the Southern lines from London to Exeter.

The author offers an interesting collection of 191 color photographs, mostly made with his own camera and page size that will delight all lovers of diesel locomotives.

A very well documented piece of history.

José Manuél Rico Cortés (Mister JM) - Miniaturas JM

I suppose a book full of pictures of trains will thrill most railway enthusiasts and the enjoyment will come from seeing photographs of a remarkable diesel at the end of that era when individual locos pulled passenger trains.
I enjoyed the introduction and the overview of Class 50's there names, where used across the country and their colour identification in service.
This is represented in the many photographs that follow and perhaps is the weakness of the book for me as I find photos of passenger trains less enjoyable than mixed goods and freight services.
I liked the brief description accompaning each image and there is a range of shots expertly showing gradients, former workings and stations. As a keeper of train numbers I remember the early period covered when engine numbers began D; the D was then lost just the number before the class was shown in the numbering. By the end the numbers are so large I cannot see how even the short-sited of train spotters could miss a passing loco's indentification.
A fine tribute to this versitile engine packed with classic railway scenery focusing on Class 50s. As usual Pen & Sword have delivered within its transport arm, a book ready for your bookcase.

Class 47 Diesel Locomotives (Hardback)

This photographic album showing the class 47 diesel locomotives has been compiled by a well-established author of similar titles, David Cable. More examples of this class were built than any other design of modern traction. They also carried more varieties of colour schemes than any other type, and these are well portrayed in this volume. The class 47 was truly the maid of all work on the British Rail system for the forty-odd years since their inception in the early 1960s, and certain members of the class are still in daily use. All types of traffic from major expresses to coal trains were worked…
