Crammed into cattle trucks and deported to camps, shot and buried in mass graves, or force-marched to death: over 1.5 million Armenians were murdered by the Turkish state, twenty years before the start of Hitler’s Holocaust. It was described as a crime against humanity and Turkey was condemned by Russia, France, Great Britain and the United States. But two decades later the genocide had been conveniently forgotten. Hitler justified his Polish death squads by asking in 1939: ‘Who after all is today speaking about the destruction of the Armenians?’
Armenian Genocide is a new, gripping short history that tells the story of a forgotten genocide: the men and women who died, the few who survived, and the diplomats who tried to intervene.
David Charlwood’s text is excellent: he has an intelligent economic way of telling the story of ‘Megh Yeghern’- the Great Crime, but it’s the harrowing photos that really tell the story, truly disturbing and tragic. This then is what so-called ‘humanity’ is capable of descending to, and only by the truth can we guard against it happening again.
Hellbound, Steve Earles
A book for those not afraid of the truth.

It is a story that must be widely read. That this and the Nazi holocaust could both take place in the 20th Century is both terrible and inexplicable. It must be a reminder of what can be done by seemingly 'normal' humans against others. By trying to forget, or to excuse, makes further crimes against humanity a constant danger.

There is a comprehensive bibliography and the author has obviously read widely to produce this book, which is concise, clearly and sympathetically written and very informative.
