This excellent book is a unique celebration of the close bond of animals and man during times of conflict.

All creatures great and small made their contribution to the war effort. Everything from elephants to messenger pigeons are celebrated in this excellent pictorially-led book. Thank heavens we have these archives and picture libraries at our disposal.

Here we are able to take a journey via these wonderful wartime images, to marvel at the often overlooked but very significant contribution and experiences of animals at war. By turns astonishing, heart-warming and occasionally more than a little bizarre, it champions the little-known stories of the bison, the chameleon, canary, dogs, cats, horses and bears among others. A wonderful book for any animal lover.

Overall this impressive Images of War title has impressed me greatly and Lucinda has shown that whatever the improvement of technological advances during this period no one can improve the rat killing statistics of a small terrier rampaging around the trenches.

A slightly different take on the Great War and an interesting addition to the Images of War series as a result.
