7th December 2011 - 70 years on
Attack on Pearl Harbour
On the morning of December 7th 1941, aircraft and midget submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy began a surprise attack on the U.S. under the command of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Despite long-standing assertions that this attack could have been predicted and prevented by the United States Military, the U.S. forces at Pearl Harbor appeared to be utterly unprepared, and the attack effectively drew the United States into World War II. The overall death toll reached 2,350, including 68 civilians, and 1,178 injured. Of the military personnel lost at Pearl Harbor, 1,177 were from the Arizona.

Sunderland Over Far-Eastern Seas
Pen & Sword at the Imperial War Museum Duxford
On 6th November, sixty members of the Aviation Society of Duxford Imperial War Museum, Cambridgeshire, attended a half-day seminar on the famous, former 4-engine RAF flying boat, the Short Sunderland. A beautifully restored Sunderland is permanently exhibited at IWM Duxford.
One of the key speakers was Group Captain Derek Empson MBE, RAF (Ret’d), a former navigator of these iconic flying boats. In a fascinating biographical account entitled, “Sunderland over Far Eastern Seas – an RAF Flying Boat Navigator’s Story” published by Pen & Sword Books Ltd, Derek Empson describes his experiences in 1952-54 while navigating these flying boats on Korean War operations over the Yellow Sea, and many other operations including bombing terrorist in the Malayan jungle and hunting for smugglers around Borneo. Derek also describes the art of Dead Reckoning and celestial navigation over the oceans using only the very basic equipment then fitted to this aircraft.
Commenting on the tremendous level of interest shown by the audience, Group Captain Empson said that, “In addition to the many types of operations we flew, the audience was plainly fascinated by the vast differences there were for aircrews operating flying boats compared with land planes”. After question time, members of the audience purchased every copy of Derek’s book that he had with him. “If I had realised the tremendous thirst there is to learn about the Sunderland and the Far East in the early 1950s, I would have brought twice the number of books with me, and could have signed and sold them all”.

Clydebank Battlecruisers
CLYDEBANK BATTLECRUISERS shows in unique pictures the construction of five battlecruisers; Inflexible, Australia, Tiger, Repulse and Hood. With lengthy and informative captions and an authoritative introduction by Ian Johnston, this book offers ship modellers and enthusiasts a wealth of visual information simply unobtainable elsewhere.
Between 1906 and 1920 the Clydebank shipyard of John Brown and Sons built five battlecruisers, each one bigger than the last, culminating in the mighty Hood, the largest warship of her day. As Tiger was a modification of the Lion class design, this represents every step in revolution of these charismatic, and controversial ships. Click here to view this extract.
